Kickstart your career as a mortgage loan officer by completing at least 20 hours of pre-license education approved by the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS). This requirement can be fulfilled online through authorized training providers, no matter where you plan to operate.

The Secure and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) for Mortgage Licensing Act of 2008 mandates that mortgage loan officers pass the national SAFE MLO Test. This exam covers both federal and state-specific regulations to meet individual state requirements. Once registered and your test fee is paid through the NMLS, you can schedule your exam with Prometric. Results are typically updated in the NMLS database within 72 hours.

After completing your education and passing the SAFE MLO Test, submit your application (Form MU4) and applicable fees to the NMLS. Log into your NMLS account to request “Approved-Inactive” status for your license. This status indicates you meet all requirements but are not yet employed as a mortgage loan originator. Once you’re hired, your employer will file a sponsorship request to transition you to “Active” status.
